I just finished this book on the weekend.
Synpopsis: Seventeen-year-old Lochan and sixteen-year-old Maya have always felt more like friends than siblings. Together they have stepped in for their alcoholic, wayward mother to take care of their three younger siblings. As defacto parents to the little ones, Lochan and Maya have had to grow up fast. And the stress of their lives—and the way they understand each other so completely—has also also brought them closer than two siblings would ordinarily be. So close, in fact, that they have fallen in love. Their clandestine romance quickly blooms into deep, desperate love. They know their relationship is wrong and cannot possibly continue. And yet, they cannot stop what feels so incredibly right. As the novel careens toward an explosive and shocking finale, only one thing is certain: a love this devastating has no happy ending.
I have read books that did involve incestuous relationships before. They are not something that are easy to read. This story, however, was extremely heartbreaking. You really feel for these characters as they fight and try to deny their feelings for one another. Eventually they do succumb to the temptation, with horrible results.
This novel is a very realistic view of this type of relationship- no matter what you do, nothing good can come out of it.
I agree, it is a sick and volatile relationship. But, while reading it, I tried to see it through their point of view. All they ever had was each other and had to step up and be the parents for their younger siblings. They never had the traditional brother/sister relationship like they did with the others.
Apparently, this is a young adult novel! But it does have a warning on it not to read unless you are 16 and over. I was a little shocked by this, because the author did write a few sexual scenes that were extremely graphic for the "young adult" genre.
I think everyone should give this book a chance. I really enjoyed it and went through tons of emotions while reading it. There were even occasions where I did get a little teary. This NEVER happens to me while reading a book. The author is an amazing writer and found myself just flying through the pages.
But be warned, this story can be a little hard to stomach. It is also a very sad and tragic story.
